About SMP

Sansom Mlup Prey Organization (SMP) is a local Cambodian non-governmental organization that focuses on developing sustainable, organic, and wildlife-friendly agricultural systems in rural communities in Cambodia. SMP was founded in 2009 by the Wildlife Conservation Society. SMP’s founding mandate was to help establish the cultivation of premium-quality, organic rice in remote communities inside the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in Cambodia’s northwestern province of Preah Vihear through the IBIS Rice Program.

Since that time, SMP has helped expand the IBIS Rice Program to other protected areas in Cambodia like the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary and the Siem Pang National Park in Stung Treng Province, and the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri province.

SMP also uses our agronomic and community development expertise to implement the Sustainable Rice Platform in Kampong Thom province in communities located near the Bengal Florican conservation area. SMP believes that the ability for rural households to earn living incomes from responsible agricultural practices is a fundamental prerequisite to wildlife conservation in contemporary Cambodia. That’s why our approach to livelihoods and community development always involve private-sector partners to ensure farmers have market access for their products.

Vision

We envision a Cambodia where rural communities earn decent, living incomes while actively preserving their biocultural heritage, protecting the integrity and composition of surrounding ecosystems, and sustainably managing natural resource use.

Mission

Our mandate is to work with farming households living in and around critical ecosystems to develop and support sustainable, organic, and wildlife-friendly agricultural practices that provide meaningful employment alternatives to poaching and the damaging exploitation of natural resources. We sustain all our interventions with a market focus, connecting agricultural products produced by communities with domestic and international consumers.
